UEFA Euro 2016: Why your favourite team won’t win the Euros this season

22:24 |
We wake up to a lot of good things today. It’s Friday, a long week has come to an end and the football ruckus in France starts tonight! The world is eagerly awaiting a month of tasty ties and some heavyweight matches. There will be a lot of support, a lot of real supporters and a million dreamers.

Presently it's alright to like and cheer your group, it's another to be sensible about their odds. While you may truly imagine that Germany will do the 'Global Double', or that Rooney will at long last lead England to something (anything!), you may need to get your trusts down.
Here is a dissection of the contenders and how your favourite team is doomed to failure. Your unrealistic expectations, of the top contenders lifting the Euro, end here.

Team France, the hosts, the shining star of the next generation of football, is delectable to look at. Likes of Paul Pogba, Martial, Kante all set your heart aflutter. So it is really disappointing to see Koscielny and Rami in the back. See the main flaw here is while people like Evra can still go at a world class rate, it’s been a while since France had a rock at the back. Someone like a Lewandowski or Vardy on their day can dismantle this French B Defence. When they come across a team that realises that these men can be rather easily exploited if you just nip at them, the game is over. There’s no Hummels or Ramos at the back, who marshalls the troops from the back. It’s a shame Varane is injured, at least his pace and timing are among the best.

Spain has rather lost its force. That is the primary thing that runs over when you consider the greatly embellished group. Pre-2014, they had ruled the world football like no other. It began with Luis Aragones and after that with Pep mavericking Barca, the tiki-taka got fused with exact results. What's more, now as I keep in touch with this, Spain has quite recently lost to Georgia in a worldwide amicable match. Losing right on time in a competition isn't different to them however, they lost to Switzerland in South Africa at the 2010 Fifa World Cup. In any case, with any semblance of Xavi maturing, and any semblance of Fabregas not by any stretch of the imagination topping off that void, it feels like the brilliant age has hit its crescendo. Manor is gone, Torres is a swan tune away and the youthful felines haven't generally ventured up. Morata is a hit in an alliance where Evra has recently won the Scudetto. With Iniesta and co. at the end of their life, it appears this is a competition where a star may report himself in Koke or Thiago or even Morata. On the other hand it's a tribute to one of the best sides ever and it's a great opportunity to say farewell.

The German squad is like a well-oiled machine, efficient and sleek; that just looks like Thomas Mueller up front. Seriously how does he score?! He is one of the most prolific strikers in Europe and it just baffles the lot of us. He looks like the waterboy had to be the 11th man because the reserves were all injured. Anyway, it’s what’s behind him that matters. The Germans are the favorites, after all, and have players at the right peak and playing at the right positions. The likes of Bastian, Gotze, Ozil, Kroos all make a legendary midfield and further back you have Boateng and Hummels as the foundation. And then there is Michael Neuer. It’s hard to find a spot but there is one, and it takes us back to the handsome Thomas Mueller. If he is shut down or injured then you have an over-the-hill Mario Gomez, and the ghost of Lukas Podolski. By any stretch of imagination, a squad like Spain or even France could handle those two at their mid-30s.

See I’m a fair man, I live by fair rules. So I am graciously putting my team through the ropes as well. I support England and here is why they won’t win. The reason won’t be enthusiasm and passion because we are just past the most inspiring and storied-EPL ever! This is better than Rooney or Aguero scoring for the two Manchester clubs. This is a Cinderella story like no other. The likes of Vardy and the Leicester gang have now their names etched in the history books for their heroics this season. Equally buoying was Tottenham’s performance. Boasting of young, spirited English talent, Spurs rose through the ranks to clinch at the third position. All this passion and bravado pumping through… and that’s the Achilles. The tournament is won by precise, discipline execution (a la Greece 2004) as much as sparkling team play. England have a lot going for them, but a cool and calm Germany can easily pick them off, frustrate them, and go in for the kill.

Ireland start with a surprising victory

02:00 |
Ireland put the world in the cup as the obliging West Indies sleepwalked to an embarrassing - does it embarrass them anymore, though? - defeat during which only Darren Sammy and Lendl Simmons seemed awake in rescuing them from 87 for 5. The West Indies bowling was as flat as their top order as the adventurous Paul Stirling, smooth Ed Joyce and nerveless Niall O'Brien coasted to the target of 305 efficiently and without any anxiety despite a late wobble that came too late. Fittingly the most compelling story played itself out in Nelson, whose population is 45000 and whose cricket ground, the Saxton Oval, holds a maximum of 6000.

There was immense joy as Ireland's discipline and nous stood in a two-finger salute to the administrators' plans to keep them and other smaller cricket teams out of the World Cup. There was grief too as West Indies showed for the most of the match a lack of application, fight and cricketing smarts. It was almost as if they had a long night out in Nelson but forgot to invite Sammy and Simmons. Only rarely do two men win matches against teams that maximise their resources as Ireland do.

Successful 300 chases in World Cups

    Ireland 329 for 7 v England in 2011
    Sri Lanka 313 for 7 v Zimbabwe in 1992
    Ireland 307 for 4 v Netherlands in 2011
    Ireland 307 for 6 v West Indies in 2015
    England 301 for 9 v West Indies in 2007

It doesn't matter that Sammy posted the highest score by a No. 7 in World Cups - 89 off 67, it doesn't matter that the 218 their lower half added was the second-highest in ODI history, it doesn't matter that Simmons accelerated from 26 off 44 to 102 off 84. What mattered was that this was a flat pitch with boundaries hard to defend, and that they didn't have the bowling to defend. Stirling and Joyce showed them how to do it, letting at no point in the chase the asking rate go beyond 6.64. This was no upset; there were 25 balls to spare when the match finished. This was a clinical defeat of a team that could not look less interested even if it tried.

The Ireland attack is made up of quicks who bowl in the mid-120s and spinners who don't turn the ball. They rely on accuracy and tenacity and clever changes of pace. West Indies have some of the biggest hitters going around who make millions through Twenty20 freelance. This was a small ground. Ireland's industrious scrappers could have come unstuck at any point of time, but by the time that happened West Indies had decisively dug themselves a hole too big through woeful shots and attitude.

Sammy, Mooney fined for inappropriate language

West Indies allrounder Darren Sammy and Ireland bowler John Mooney have been fined 30 per cent of their match fees for breaching the ICC code of conduct during their World Cup match in Nelson. Chris Broad, the match referee, found both players guilty of violating Level 1 Article 2.1.4 of the code, relating to "language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting".

According to an ICC release, Sammy was heard using inappropriate language during the 34th over of the West Indies innings, while Mooney "swore several times when a fielder dropped a catch in the 45th over".

Both players admitted their offences and accepted the fines imposed on them.

Take a look at the replays from the umpire's point of view during West Indies' first innings. None of their non-strikers backed up. They avoided singles with the faithfulness of committed men. And then take a look at the wickets. Only two fielders are allowed outside the circle in the first 10 overs. When one of them is at long-on, it takes some special skill and thinking to hit a catch down his throat. You'd venture a batsman with such skill and thinking won't be averaging more than 20; Dwayne Smith averages 19 and scored 18 here. Later in that over, Darren Bravo, possibly the worst runner going around in international cricket, took some time taking his eye patch off and registered the first diamond duck of this World Cup.

Chris Gayle played his slowest innings against a non-Test-playing nation, 36 off 65, before holing out to deep midwicket. When Marlon Samuels was caught plumb later in the same over, he proceeded to display self-indulgence by wasting a review. Denesh Ramdin went on to sweep without getting outside the line and missed. There would have been a lesson in there for Samuels had Ramdin actually got outside the line and missed out on the review, but West Indies until then were too woeful for that.

There was redemption in the air for Ireland spinners. Andy McBrine, the offpsinner chosen ahead of Craig Young and Alex Cusack, known better for his 24-run over in their rout by Netherlands in the World Twenty20, turned the screws on. He began with a maiden to Gayle before running Bravo out. George Dockrell, the other spinner who was bowled for only three overs in Ireland's defeat to West Indies in the last World Cup, then handcuffed the other big hitters and took the three wickets in the middle overs.

The last of the wickets brought Sammy and Samuels together in the 24th over. Sammy and Sameuls batted sensibly for their 154-run stand in 21.1 overs. Sammy reiterated what a grave mistake it was to strip the ODI captaincy of him. West Indies took 167 off the last 15 overs, but the telling comment was made by the centurion Simmons in a spot interview. He said they would have ideally wanted 340 on this surface.

The words rang true from the time William Porterfield and Stirling began to hit boundaries early in the chase. Stirling wore one on the head early in the piece, but hooked the next bouncer for a six. There was emphasis on bowling short, and there was limited success enjoyed by West Indies with that. However, the wicket of Porterfield fell to Gayle's part-time offspin. That hardly broke the momentum as Joyce and Stirling flowed smoothly. Stirling took the odd risk, but Joyce hardly made a mistake.

There was a ruthlessness to how the two went about the chase. There had been a relatively quiet phase when Kemar Roach came back to bowl the 23rd over. The asking rate was at its highest at this point, but Roach's three overs earlier had gone for 26. Stirling just took him on. The first ball he slogged over midwicket for six. The third he pulled for four. The pressure had dissipated. In the next over Joyce went after Sammy, hitting him for three fours. West Indies went back to Jerome Taylor in the next over, and Stirling hit him out of the attack too, taking 18 off the over.

The ask was now down to less than a run a ball, and now the only question was if there would be an icing with centuries to both. They weren't to be. Stirling fell eight short, Joyce 16, but ever the scrapper, Niall O'Brien made sure there were no major stutters with an unbeaten 79 off 60. The biggest icing, though, was that of the five successful chases of 300 in all World Cups, three have been delivered by Ireland, two of them against Test nations. Still want to keep them out?

Kohli's century leads India to a comfotable win over Rivals

01:56 |
If Adelaide had never seen anything quite like it, the noisy hordes of India and Pakistan supporters were well and truly familiar with this tale. A Virat Kohli hundred and supporting hands from Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina lifted India to 300 for 7, and the task of claiming victory proved beyond Pakistan for the sixth time out of six in this most intense of World Cup fixtures.

Just as the "sell-out" crowd of 41,587 fell some 10,000 short of Adelaide Oval's capacity, the contest did not quite reach the heights many had hoped for. Pakistan's chase of 301 was too jittery, and the captain Misbah-ul-Haq was left in the familiar position of keeping his head while all around him were losing theirs. Misbah's innings ran Kohli's close for the best of the match, but it was the collective effort of India's batsmen that made the difference - Dhawan and Raina also contributed substance.

MS Dhoni then marshaled his men skilfully, cajoling strong spells out of Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohit Sharma and R Ashwin on a surface that slowed a little as the match wore on. India received one helping of assistance when Umar Akmal was given out caught behind off Ravindra Jadeja via DRS referral, based on evidence that seemed circumstantial at best, but in truth the match had already begun to slope away from Pakistan.

The loss of Ahmed Shehzad followed by Sohaib Maqsood in the space of three balls from Umesh, after the establishment of what seemed a sound platform, was the hammer blow to Pakistan's chase, leaving too much for the middle order to do in a team featuring the explosive but never completely reliable Shahid Afridi as high as No. 7. Shami's four wickets were a just reward for his efforts, which began with the early wicket craved by MS Dhoni, when Younis Khan mis-hooked and was taken behind by India's captain.

That sort of a start had been made all the more important due to exemplary death-bowling by Pakistan. As well as Kohli played in a worthy reprise of his twin hundreds on this ground in last year's Border-Gavaskar Test match, India did not quite get away as they would have wanted on a hot day and a blameless pitch. This was down largely to some excellent work with both new and old ball by Sohail Khan, supported by Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz.

When Raina and Kohli were motoring towards the end of their 110-run stand, it seemed as though 330 was plausible. As it was, only 21 runs came from the final four overs. Sohail claimed five wickets when he did MS Dhoni for too much pace and then Ajinkya Rahane for too little with the first two balls of the 50th, narrowly missing a hat-trick when his yorker beat not only Mohammed Shami but also the off stump.

It may even have been better for Pakistan. Kohli offered a pair of difficult chances, and Pakistan needed to clasp at least one of them in order to restrict India to a less lofty total. Yasir Shah could not hold onto a running chance at deep midwicket when Kohli had made just three, and on 76 a well-pitched, left-arm orthodox from Haris Sohail evaded the gloves of Umar Akmal.

Misbah might also have miscalculated slightly when he gave the ball to Afridi before Yasir. While Afridi's greater experience merited his introduction, Yasir was not called upon until Kohli and Dhawan were well set, and struggled to contain rather than seeking wickets against batsmen less sure of themselves - his final figures a barren 0 for 60 in eight overs.

Masses of spectators from India had assembled at the Oval's southern plaza before the match, with another gathering at the Rotunda in Elder Park across the Torrens River. Pakistan's gathering was smaller but resplendent in a mass of green shirts in the lower tier of the eastern stand.

Both groups were initially kept a little quiet as Mohammad Irfan and Sohail Khan began with discipline and purpose. Sohail's first ball swung back at Dhawan and drew a speculative appeal, though replays indicated the ball had struck bat rather than pad. Irfan's bounce extracted one edge that flew to where a third slip might have been, but Misbah's intent to defend was made clear when the second slip disappeared the ball after Dhawan cut the first boundary of the day behind point.

Rohit Sharma has recently been India's most dominant ODI force, but he was hurried out by Sohail, who generated considerable pace from his strong-shouldered action and arrived too quickly for the batsman's attempted pull shot. Dhawan's travails on this tour have been many, and it was a somewhat chastened figure who took his time at the other end, gathering steady momentum but respecting Pakistan's bowlers.

Kohli, too, had some recent outs behind him, failing to pass 20 in the triangular series or either of India's Cup warm-up matches. So he played within himself, helping India to keep wickets in hand for a later surge that is already becoming customary at this tournament, only two days and four matches into its narrative. Yasir's dropped chance was the moment's grace Kohli required.

It was also the introduction of Yasir that signalled a higher gear from Kohli, boundaries disappearing through cover and mid off and 11 runs from the wrist spinner's second over taking India past a run rate of five an over for the first time. From there it continued up and up, punctuated only by Dhawan's dismissal for an important 73. Even that moment aided India's momentum, for Raina immediately struck the ball cleanly, taking advantage of the gaps left by the presence of only four men outside the fielding circle at most.

Kohli's hundred drew Indian paroxysms of delight and an expression of relief and gratitude from the batsman, his departure a just reward for Sohail's persistence. Raina and Dhoni were then expected to pile up the runs in the closing overs, but exemplary death bowling from Sohail and Wahab, much as their captain Misbah had forecast on match eve, meant India did not get past 300.

Pakistan went to the dinner break with plenty of optimism, but it would prove too flimsy to sustain them through the pressures of the sort of chase that has tripped them up in all but one of their six Cup defeats at Indian hands. They will look back ruefully on moments like Yasir's dropped catch, or Umar's caught behind dismissal. India, meanwhile, can look ahead with hope. At an effervescent Adelaide Oval, their winless Australian tour has turned a corner.

00:06 |
The Brazilian netted twice for the guests as Diego Simeone's men lost their heads, with Gabi and Mario Suarez both getting sent off and Arda tossing his boot at a linesman

Barcelona vanquished nine-man Atletico Madrid 3-2 to advance to the last four of the Copa del Rey 4-2 on total after a hair-raisingly unstable experience in the Spanish capital.

The Blaugrana touched base at the Vicente Calderon with an one-objective focal point from a week ago's first leg at Camp Nou yet Fernando Torres leveled the tie on total inside 60 seconds with a low complete, just for Neymar to react in kind in the ninth moment.

Raul Garcia set Atletico back ahead on the night with a contentous punishment yet Barca went in 3-2 ahead at the break on account of an own objective from Miranda and Neymar's second strike of the nighttime.

Gabi was then rejected amid irate scenes amid the half-time interim that likewise saw Raul Garcia go against the Barca seat, while Arda Turan then drastically tossed his boot at a linesman ahead of schedule in the second half.

All trust Atletico had of turning the tie around vanished in the end stages when Mario Suarez was sent off for a brief moment bookable offense for dispute, hence bringing an end to a staggeringly argumentative and energizing experience.

Inside the opening moment Torres had leveled the tie taking after some unique messy Barcelona safeguarding from Javier Mascherano.

His long ball out of safeguard was caught by Guilherme Siqueira on the midway line, he discovered Torres and the striker let go into the base corner.

With commotion resonating around the Vicente Calderon, Atletico seemed to have the high ground, yet Neymar soon quietened them down with an equalizer following nine minutes.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez consolidated well on the right-hand side, before the recent played a flawless pass for the Brazilian, and he committed no error to beat Jan Oblak.

Neymar thought he had amplified Barca's total lead in the eighteenth moment as he hustled clear from a long freedom to score, yet the aide arbitrator's banner denied him on this event.

Antoine Griezmann ought to have restored Atletico's playing point on the night three minutes prior to the half hour, however he terminated directly at Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Inside 60 seconds, however, they were ahead as Raul Garcia scored from the spot - the midfielder terminating home from 12 yards after Mascherano was declared to have fouled Juanfran on the edge of the range.

Barca leveled after eight minutes because of a Miranda own objective. The safeguard miscued a freedom into his own net after Sergio Busquets' header.

Furthermore, as the force moved to support them once more, the Catalans went in at the break ahead after an alternate quick counter-assault. Atletico had seen a punishment offer waved away before Messi drove the energize the flip side of the pitch and discovered Jordi Alba, who played the ball in for Neymar to score.

The show did not ease up and, as tempers started to shred at the break, Atletico midfielder Gabi was rejected in the passage for his association in a fracas.

Arda Turan was then lucky not to tail him right on time in the second half when he was just demonstrated a yellow card having tossed his boot at the aide after the non-recompense of a foul.

Barcelona's man preference empowered the guests to direct the pace in the second 45 minutes, and they gradually took the sting out of Atletico's play.

Diego Simeone's side were still ready to make a few chances, with substitute Cani having the best of them when his 70th-moment strike was decently spared by Ter Stegen. However any trusts Atletico had of mounting a late rebound finished with seven minutes remaining when Mario Suarez was sent off.

Barca had done what's necessary and now anticipate Getafe or Villarreal in the semi-last, with those two because of meet on Thursday.(taken from GOAL.COM)

23:15 |

Gareth Bale was the legend for Real Madrid as his punishment grabbed a 2-1 win over Cordoba on Saturday after Cristiano Ronaldo had been sent off.

Ronaldo was given a straight red card for kicking out at a Cordoba protector with the score stopped at 1-1 eight minutes from time at the Estadio Nuevo Arcangel on Saturday.

On the other hand, Bale saved his colleague's reddens when he changed over from the punishment spot in the 89th moment after his own particular free kick had been took care of - with Cordoba's Federico Cartabia accepting a second booking for that offense.

Genuine subsequently move four focuses clear of Barcelona in front of the Catalans' excursion to Elche later on Saturday, yet Carlo Ancelotti will be concerned by his side's execution and the actuality Ronaldo - who cut a disappointed figure all through the conflict - could now confront a three-amusement boycott for rough direct.

Genuine persevered through an unpleasant begin as Nabil Ghilas unhesitatingly changed over from the punishment spot after Sergio Ramos took care of Bebe's shot only three minutes in.

Cordoba's certainty kept on growwing after they had led the pack, with Bebe, Ghilas and Cartabia looking especially undermining on the counter.

Manchester United failure Bebe practically put the hosts two objectives to the positive qualities in the eighteenth moment, terminating simply wide of the post taking after a driving run into the punishment range.

Notwithstanding showing up to some degree shaken by Cordoba's strong methodology, Real inevitably restored equality through Benzema just before the half-hour mark.

The France striker wounded home from short proximity after James Rodriguez's corner was flicked on by Bale.

Genuine attempted to expand upon their equalizer, nonetheless, with their ritzy cutting edge having little fortunes cutting out obvious chances against a decently composed Cordoba guard.

Ancelotti neglected to move a change with his half-time words, as Cordoba stayed pretty much as undermining going ahead.

Indeed, the hosts showed up the more made out of the two sides in assault and went close twice in speedy progression in the 56th moment.

Cartabia initially crushed a furious exertion simply wide of the upper left corner from 25 yards, before Bebe let go directly at Iker Casillas after a solid solo run.

Their most obvious opportunity came after 12 minutes, however.

Florin Andone jumped on Raphael Varane's powerless header and circled an exertion over the approaching Casillas, yet the ball skiped up and hit the bar.

Cordoba seemed set to procure a merited moment that Ronaldo was rejected soon after - the Ballon d'or victor responding furiously to close consideration from his markers amid a free kick - however Bale was available to scratch each of the three focuses with his late, late punishment.

At United the highest point of-the-table conflict between hosts Namibia and Nepal was on show as the Nepalese won by three wickets with 73 balls remaining.

Nepal won the throw and chose to field, which ended up being a decent choice as it knocked down some pins out Namibia's top request generally economically. Stephan Baard (9) and Merwe Erasmus (14) both went ahead of schedule, before Raymond Van Schoor scored 28 to attempt to lead Namibia to a respectable score. Messi Missed Penalty gives Barca a narrow win over Atletico

20:31 |
The Argentine missed a late penalty however responded rapidly to thump in the bounce back and give the home side the win in the first-leg

Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a slim 1-0 point of interest over Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-last.

Barca finished a stunning 3-1 win in La Liga over Atletico 10 days back however, on their come back to Camp Nou, Diego Simeone's dominant Spanish champions turned in an execution reviewing memories of the association and power that saw them evade overcome in excess of six recreations against the Catalan club last season.

Luis Suarez spurned an eminent opportunity to break the stop nine prior minutes half-time as an apparatus in charge of various huge minutes over late seasons neglected to completely spring up.

In spite of tightening their regular grasp on ownership as the match advanced, Barcelona were disappointed by a staunch Atletico backline until Sergio Busquets tumbled under insignificant contact when a Messi free-kick was somewhat cleared.

Going to goalkeeper Jan Oblak radiantly got a firm hand to the Argentine's spot-kick, however he was powerless to keep Messi from mesh the bounce back.

Barcelona mentor Luis Enrique remain faithful to the 10 outfield players who beat Atletico so convincingly prior in the month however gave goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen his now standard review for glass activity.

In the inverse dug-out, Simeone made a comparable goalkeeping call, beginning with Oblak, and the Slovenian was at full extend to keep an early twisting exertion from Neymar.

Messi was Atletico's tormentor-in-boss the last time the sides met and the Barca talisman showed up in a threatening temperament afresh, joining with Dani Alves and Ivan Rakitic to flame over in the twelfth moment.

In any case constant waves of assaults did not take after on this event and, when Gerard Pique avoided a Fernando Torres exertion behind in the 32nd moment, an all the more even challenge had created.

The principal half's clearest open door still tumbled to Barcelona - Suarez lifting a shot inefficiently over from short proximity after Rakitic had discovered the forward with a glorious pass on the volley. Then again, Pique required a crucial capture attempt to obstruct Torres and Antoine Griezmann on a 39th-moment counter-assault.

Mario Mandzukic supplanted Torres at the interim and Barcelona continued on the front foot - Jordi Alba darting in behind the Atletico safeguard to flame a hazardous left-wing cross into the goalmouth.

Juanfran made an essential ethereal test to deny Neymar yet, as the hour approached, Barcelona again ended up limited to a disappointing spell of intermittent half-risks.

Andres Iniesta whipped a 25-yard shot goalwards with 16 minutes staying, giving Oblak a routine and progressively uncommon spare, while Suarez took a tumble under the considerations of Uruguay universal partner Diego Godin - the match authorities uninterested in his cases for a foul before a booking for contradiction arrived.

In the long run, Barca's weight in the inexorably irritable shutting minutes told and Messi beat Oblak at the second time of asking after his beginning punishment had been spared, in spite of the fact that Atletico will hold any desires for catching up their end of holders and opponents Real Madrid in the past round with an alternate popular scalp.
